was the word. and the word was: mousetrap.
yup, mousetrap – local indy folks may know of this little “dive” bar on keystone ave. i was working at the mousetrap when brett and i met 16 years ago. i was a recent college graduate, working over the summer to save money to move to tucson, arizona.
on a late june afternoon, a very cute young man with very long hair came into the bar to have lunch with a friend. since i was the only waitress, our interaction was inevitable. as i took their orders, he commented that he liked the grateful dead t-shirt i was wearing. “was i going to any of the shows coming up this weekend at deer creek ?”(this was pre-verizon music center – deer creek was an outdoor amphitheater where ‘the dead’ played.)
and so began a conversation that has now lasted 16 years.
we had our first date the same evening he had come into the mousetrap for lunch. more days passed, more dates were had. we fell in love quickly. he was/is one of the most interesting people i have ever met. he likes things quiet and calm. he does not fill silence with idle chatter. he is thorough and meticulous (virgo!). he thinks deeply and feels things even more deeply. he has many tender, feminine qualities. he has silently endured extreme hardships (including tumultuous and destructive childhood and adult traumas.) he always looks very serious, and sometimes, rather bored. that being said, he says the funniest things – and we laugh together everyday. he likes to dance – and has an eye for aesthetics. he is an intuitive and a visionary.
as you can tell, he has made quite an impression on me. and he rarely holds back – on our first date, he talked about his views on reincarnation, the pleiades, shamanism, meditation….(i think he was testing me, to see how i would react to his “deep thoughts.”) i was blown away. i had never met anyone who talked so openly about these topics…. and we are still having these conversations, almost every night.
so today, october 3rd is our 12 year wedding anniversary. we married on a hilltop in beautiful brown county, indiana – just as the leaves were beginning to show fall colors, but the air was still warm and the sky cerulean blue – about 50 friends and family members gathered with us to participate in our ceremony.
i wrote our wedding ceremony, compiling the words and passages – drawing on language, imagery and ritual from many different faith traditions throughout the world. here is an excerpt from our ceremony:
we stand upon this holy earth and in the face of the heavens to witness the sacred rite of marriage between brett and lisa. just as we come together as family and friends, so we ask the greater powers to be present here within our circle. may this sacred union be filled with the holy presence of god and goddess and all that is. let the 4 directions be honored that power and radiance might enter our circle for the good of all beings.
within every masculine nature lies the feminine. within every feminine nature lies the masculine. the interplay of masculine and feminine forces, when flowing freely, in a union based upon true love, finds many expressions. this union is truly holy.
marriage is an embrace of souls. it is a whole-hearted dedication to surrender to love, to trust in love and to learn by love.
may the wings of the angels uphold you through all the life of your love. may your hearts be full. may your lips stay sweet. may your love grow strong. may you live long and happily in each other’s arms.
god and goddess and all that is, sentient spirits and souls of ancestors, accept this union. help them. guide them. protect and bless their home and the children born of their union. god of tenderness and strength, we pray now for all who are committed to each other in love. we thank the powers of love and peace for their presence within this sacred place. may the world be filled with harmony and light. hold peace and love in our hearts until we meet again…..
enjoy this beautiful day! may you be filled with an overflowing love and gratitude for this life.
